YouTube has just announced in quick succession the addition of audio ads for users who listen to music on the platform and the addition of pre-rolls on the videos of small creators… without remuneration for them.
YouTube is the benchmark platform for video sharing, far ahead of its main competitors, and Google takes the opportunity to regularly add elements that can annoy creators and users alike. A service of this scope obviously costs a lot to maintain and, to make it profitable, Google has decided to add new ads.
Audio ads on YouTube
Many users use YouTube as a service for streaming musical, keeping a tab open in the background. Also, on musical content and other podcasts that can be listened to more than they are watched, YouTube will therefore to integrate, according to Melissa Hsieh Nikolic, Product Manager of YouTube Ads, ads of around 15 seconds are mostly audio-based.
These ads will be accompanied by a visual, such as a static image or a short animation, but they will be aimed primarily at those who listen to their content on YouTube and not those who watch it. The message sent to advertisers is to stay “clear and specific” so that “if i close my eyes i can still clearly understand what the ad is about ».
Small creators used for advertising
Thus, the videos of small creators can now contain advertisements. On the other hand, these creators are not partners of YouTube, they will not receive the slightest penny from the profits generated by their channel. It goes without saying that this announcement has already provoked strong reactions on social networks.
For now, this change only affects the United States, but these new terms of service will be in effect worldwide by the end of next year.
A new reason to turn to YouTube Premium
Obviously, the increasing number of advertisements, this should push the visitors of the platform to turn to YouTube Premium. This subscription at 12 euros per month allows, among other things, to remove all ads from YouTube.
