  • Approval and comfort
  • Autonomy (42 kWh)
  • Very successful driving aids and infotainment

Are you considering the purchase of a new electric car, but the budget you have set for this acquisition must not exceed 20,000 euros? There is not yet much choice in the new vehicle market, but there are still some models available under this symbolic bar, in particular thanks to the ecological bonus of 7,000 euros (or 27% of the price of the car) set up by the government (the maximum bonus will increase to 6,000 euros from the 1is July 2021). We should not expect a family model, much less an SUV, but rather micro-city cars with more or less adequate autonomy for urban use.

The best electric cars for less than 20,000 euros

The cars presented in this file are under 20,000 euros, once the ecological bonus has been deducted. For some, depending on the desired finishes and equipment, the fateful threshold may be exceeded. Customers are more and more fond of rental with option to purchase, a system that consists of renting the car for periods ranging from three to five years, in general, and paying a predefined amount every month during this period. An amount that can vary depending on the first contribution, the annual mileage or the residual value of the car.

At the end of the rental contract, you have two options: buy back the car and exercise the purchase option, or return the car. Financing solutions also exist without a purchase option, such as long-term rental for example, where there will be no purchase option at the end of the rental, only the return will be possible. We will therefore give you an idea of the monthly payments for the cars presented, while knowing that they can vary widely according to the parameters mentioned above.

The most “opulent”

Volkswagen E-Up!

  • Important autonomy
  • 250 liters of trunk
  • Smoothness of driving

The Volkswagen e-up! was the first of three 100% electric city cars from the Volkswagen group to emerge. It was launched in 2013 and had, at the time, a battery of only 18.7 kWh of capacity. Since its restyling in 2019, the e-up! almost doubled the size of its battery with 36,8 kWh and can browse up to 260 kilometers autonomy with a single charge. Its engine 83 horses and 212 Nm de couple allows him to evolve in the city and on the secondary network with a certain ease.

Of the three models, the Volkswagen e-up! is the most expensive because it is also the most “opulent”. The price difference is not significant, however, since it starts from 23,740 euros. With a bonus of 6,410 euros, its starting price is 17 330 euros. In terms of monthly payment, depending on the conditions set up by Volkswagen, it is possible to arrive at around 270 euros per month for a model with a few options.

  • Dimensions : L x l x h : 3,60 m x 1,65 m x 1,49 m
  • Chest : 250 liters
  • 0 to 100 km / h: 11.9 seconds
  • Consumption: 14.5 to 16.4 kWh / 100 km
  • Drums : 8-year or 160,000 km warranty (if capacity less than 70%)

For pure city dwellers

Smart EQ Fortwo Cabrio

  • An ideal template in town
  • Pleasant to drive
  • Sufficient autonomy for daily trips

This is arguably the perfect car for pure city dwellers who will never venture outside the cities. Even use on the secondary network can give you a cold sweat on board the Smart EQ Fortwo and its battery with a capacity of only 17,5 kWh. With about 120 kilometers autonomy in WLTP cycle and less than 100 kilometers outside of cities or in sub-zero temperatures, you better know where you are going with it.

Strict two-seater, the Smart Fortwo is also available in a convertible version for 3300 euros more. Its engine 82 horses and 160 Nm de couple, the same as in the Renault Twingo Electric, and its very small size, make it a pleasant car to drive in an urban environment.

Since its restyling, the abandonment of the purely thermal versions and the integration of a new 8-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Smart EQ Fortwo clearly targets city dwellers. It is necessary to count from 26,750 euros, excluding bonus. The Smart is very expensive in view of its services, but the maximum bonus of 7,000 euros makes it possible to alleviate the pain and to drop below 20,000 euros at 19 750 euros very precisely.

Depending on Smart’s conditions, count around 250 euros for a model with some interesting equipment, without having a high-end car. Note that the Smart Forfour, with four seats and based on the Twingo Electric, can be available for 20,600 euros once the bonus has been deducted.

  • Dimensions : L x l x h : 2,69 m x 1,66 m x 1,55 m
  • Chest : 260 liters
  • 0 to 100 km / h: 11.5 seconds
  • Consumption: 16.6 kWh / 100 km
  • Drums : 8 years or 100,000 km warranty (if capacity less than 70%)

Fiat 500

  • Approval and comfort
  • Autonomy (42 kWh)
  • Very successful driving aids and infotainment

The new Fiat 500 is electric and comes to support an aging thermal version which already dates from 2007. With its battery of 42 kWh, it can reach up to 330 kilometers autonomy under the WLTP cycle. Its electric motor 118 horses and 220 Nm de couple Gives it a nice approval with performance above all the models presented here. A 95 horsepower version, with a 23.7 kWh battery allowing a range of around 185 kilometers, will complete the catalog in spring 2021.

In terms of price, the electric Fiat 500 starts from 27,500 euros, excluding the ecological bonus. With 7000 euros of bonus, the price increases to 20 500 euros, slightly above our established budget, but this small 500 is certainly the most opulent and the most successful of the electric city cars presented in this dossier.

At this price, you will not be entitled to the 3 +1 version with the small opposing right rear door, optional at 2,000 euros, nor to the convertible version claiming 3,400 euros more. The small version of 95 horses will be offered from 24,500 euros, excluding the ecological bonus of 6,615 euros. Fiat communicates on financing offers starting at 270 euros for the 500th with the 42 kWh battery and around 220 euros with the 23.7 kWh battery.

  • Dimensions : L x l x h : 3,63 m x 1,68 m x 1,53 m
  • Chest : 185 liters
  • 0 to 100 km / h: 9.0 seconds
  • Consumption: 13.8 kWh / 100 km
  • Drums : 8 year or 160,000 km warranty

Renault Twingo Electric

The technical cousin of the Smart Forfour took a long time to be presented, since it took until 2020 for the most popular of the current Renault models to be available in a 100% electric version. The Twingo Electric has an autonomy of approximately 190 kilometers according to the WLTP mixed cycle and can be recharged from 0 to 80% in one hour on a public 22 kW terminal. The electric motor distills 83 horses and 160 Nm de couple. It is powered by a battery with a capacity of 22 kWh.

Rather agile, the Renault Twingo Electric is perfectly at home in the city for daily trips. Her maximum speed limited to 135 km / h and her small battery do not make her a good traveler, but this is not necessarily her primary vocation. It is necessary to count from 21,350 euros in starting price, excluding ecological bonus of 5,764 euros, and not 7,000 euros, because it is limited to 27% of the price of the car, which brings us to a price of 15 586 euros. In terms of rental, Renault communicates on offers starting at 99 euros per month for an entry-level model with a “Life” finish, it will take around 160 euros per month for a mid-range version “Zen” correctly. equipped.

  • Dimensions : L x l x h : 3,62 m x 1,65 m x 1,54 m
  • Chest : 240 liters
  • 0 to 100 km / h: 12.9 seconds
  • Consumption: 16 kWh / 100 km
  • Drums : 8-year or 160,000 km warranty (if capacity less than 70%)

Seat Mii Electric

Seat Mii Electric

This is the first of a triplet of very interesting 100% electric city cars from the Volkswagen group. The Seat Mii Electric shares its platform, battery and engine with the Škoda Citigo e iV and Volkswagen e-up! presented a little further down. The little Spanish girl with a Germanic accent receives a battery of 36,8 kWh, allowing it an autonomy of approximately 260 kilometers in mixed cycle WLTP. Its field of action is limited to the city with a maximum speed of 130 km / h and an autonomy that melts like snow in the sun on the highway. The engine develops 83 horses and 212 Nm de couple.

Regarding prices, the Seat Mii is cheaper than the Volkswagen e-up! and is a little better equipped in terms of standard equipment. The Citigo is less expensive, but less supplied. It takes from 21,920 euros for a Mii Electric, minus a bonus of 5,918 euros, still within the limit of 27% of the price. This gives us a price of around 16 000 euros once the bonus has been deducted. According to the financing conditions of Seat, it takes around 250 euros per month for this model with some options.

  • Dimensions : L x l x h : 3,60 m x 1,65 m x 1,49 m
  • Chest : 250 liters
  • 0 to 100 km / h: 11.9 seconds
  • Consumption: 14.5 to 16.4 kWh / 100 km
  • Drums : 8-year or 160,000 km warranty (if capacity less than 70%)

Škoda Citigo e iV

As stated above, the Škoda Citigo e iV shares many elements with the Seat Mii and Volkswagen e-up !, except that it is slightly more accessible, because it is a little less well equipped as standard. Overall, she does not have much to envy her Spanish and German cousins, the Czech has the same battery of 36,8 kWh allowing to browse approximately 260 kilometers with a single charge. The engine is developing there too 83 horses and 212 Nm de couple.

The car is no longer available in the manufacturer’s catalog in France, although it was introduced only a little over a year ago. The brand explains that the vehicle quota allocated for Europe was expired last year. Contacted by us, Škoda informed us that the Citigo e iV will not return to France in 2021, nor even after that. The Czech firm will sell the last copies in Germany and Norway, before leaving the field open to Volkswagen e-ups! and Seat Mii.

However, there are still a few new models available in stock at the time of this writing. Before its disappearance from the catalog, the car was displayed at 21,600 euros. With a bonus of 5,832 euros, its price came to only 15 768 euros. Not bad for a new electric car.

  • Dimensions : L x l x h : 3,60 m x 1,65 m x 1,49 m

  • 0 to 100 km / h: 11.9 seconds
  • Consumption: 14.5 to 16.4 kWh / 100 km
