iFixit took apart the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro. The two phones share a number of components, including the display and battery.
Like every year, iFixit, specialist in the repair of high-tech products, dismantled the iPhones in order to note their ” repairability “. Once the components are laid flat, this confirms what we already knew by looking carefully at their technical sheet: the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro have many interchangeable components.
Same screen, same battery …
iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, for example, share the same A14 chip, like the two other smartphones in the range (iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max). No surprises here since it is the case every year.
But the two phones have much more in common, starting with their screen, which one could guess by reading the technical characteristics of the two devices. iFixit confirms it: they are interchangeable, even though the maximum brightness (in standard display) is different. With the slab removed, the two iPhones are almost perfect twins. With the exception of the protection of the photo module, one could almost imagine that each component is interchangeable. Some are also, like the battery or the Taptic Engine taking care of the vibrations of the phone.
In their arrangement, the two devices are so similar that the iPhone 12 has a small plastic piece that serves to fill in the space where the telephoto and LiDAR of the iPhone 12 Pro are located.
By digging a little deeper still under the various components, iFixit discovered that the two smartphones are almost identical down to their motherboard. However, there are some small differences, starting with the amount of RAM: 4 GB (LPDDR4) on the iPhone 12 and 6 GB on the iPhone 12 Pro.
The choice has never been so difficult
This teardown proves, if it still had to be done, that the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro are extremely close to each other, which does not help to make a choice to purchase. As we could already imagine, the big difference between the two smartphones is in the photo and you will have to wonder if a telephoto lens, a LiDAR sensor and some additional software features allowed by the 2 GB of RAM in addition to you. are useful enough to justify spending 200 euros more.
