Samsung is looking for new ways to polish its next folding smartphones. Among the avenues that the brand would keep under the elbow, the addition of front cameras placed under the screens of the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
With its Galaxy Z Fold 2, Samsung made notable improvements to its folding smartphone concept last September. More elegant, with planed edges and overall more successful than its predecessor the Galaxy Fold of 2019, the device nevertheless accommodated two front cameras housed directly in its main and secondary screens, both marked with a small punch. A concession to the design that Samsung may not renew on its Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Expected later this year, the brand’s next folding smartphone could indeed rely on front cameras discreetly installed under its screens.
Many new features in prospect for the Z Fold 3
The rumor of a Z Fold 3 equipped with UPC (Under Panel Camera) technology reappears anyway through the leaker Chinese Ice Universe, whose veracity of information is unfortunately quite variable. This persistent rumor therefore deserves to be taken with all the necessary hindsight, but it will be recalled all the same that Samsung mentioned a few weeks ago a technology of this type for future computers. If the latter is sufficiently perfected, it is plausible that the Korean giant seeks to exploit it on its next flagship.

Anyway, this would not be the only novelty provided by the new version of the folding smartphone. Other rumors suggest that the Z Fold 3 could be lighter than the Z Fold 2, have a slightly smaller cover screen, or even fold in three. It could also support the “S-Pen” that Samsung has popularized year after year with its Note range, which is now in decline. It would be an interesting idea to use the Z Fold’s large screen in a different way when unfolded.
Not long ago, Ice Universe indicated that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 could be marketed this summer along with the Galaxy Z Flip 2, more or less on the usual Galaxy Note launch window.
A technology already launched by ZTE
We already know that other manufacturers are actively working in this sector. This is particularly the case of Xiaomi or Oppo, two manufacturers who have already demonstrated their prototypes at the beginning of last year. In addition, the Chinese ZTE has already launched a smartphone equipped with a selfie sensor in the screen, the ZTE Axon 20 5G. However, the quality of the shots like that of the display in front of the photo sensor still leaves much to be desired.
In addition, last November, it was the Korean media ETNews which already indicated that Samsung was working on a photo sensor hidden behind the screen. A realization, for the manufacturer, of its design concept « New Infinity ». The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected to launch during the summer, in Q3 2021.
