Expected in the course of the year 2023, the Cadillac Celestiq will offer an electrochromic roof whose color can be adjusted according to your wishes. Already seen in the automotive industry, this technology brings with it some interesting advantages.
Like almost all manufacturers in the automotive industry, Cadillac has also embarked on the adventure of electric cars. The first model of the American manufacturer, the Lyriq SUV with a range of 500 kilometers and a 33-inch interior screen, was notably inducted in August 2020. Its launch is expected before the end of 2022 in the United States.
The following year, another automobile should join the electric catalog: the Cadillac Celestiq, which is expected in the luxury sedan segment with regard to its price list of around $ 200,000. But above all, this four-wheeler should not skimp on technology with a well-stocked paraphernalia that should satisfy the most technophile among us.
Technology already seen
This Cadillac Celestiq will, for example, carry an electrochromic roof – also called PD-Smartglass by its manufacturer Research Frontiers – capable of adjusting its color with a simple button, from completely opaque to completely transparent. This glass roof has a film of small nanoparticles which react according to an electrical voltage. This then influences the level of opacity.
As recalled Engadget, this technology has already cut its teeth on thermal models from Mercedes at the beginning of the 2010s. However, it is still rare in the electric segment – only the Rivian R1S offers it as an option. An electrochromic roof has many advantages despite its inevitably higher costs than a conventional roof.
More economical for electricity
Glare can be blocked at up to 99.5%, Research Frontiers reports, when heat can be reduced by 95%. In summer, for example, the driver will tend to use the air conditioning less during hot weather, positively impacting battery consumption in an electric car.
Still according to the specialist, this type of roof would also have an effect on the soundproofing of the vehicle when it is in motion. The fact is that Cadillac wants to give itself an innovative and high-end brand image here thanks to a technology that is still rare in the electric sector. Technology which will not however be within everyone’s reach in view of the Celestiq’s pricing position.
