Take up the recipe for the high-end Roomba i7 model by reducing certain features to soften the price: this is the strategy of the American iRobot. Here is the Roomba i3 + which takes over the suction power, intelligent navigation and even the Clean Base self-evacuation system, but at a lower price than its big brother.
A leading player in the robot vacuum cleaner market, iRobot took advantage of CES 2021, even virtual, to launch its Roomba i3 / i3 + worldwide, already announced at the end of 2019 in the United States.
This model is intended to be the “top of the mid-range”. The idea is to allow access to the most advanced technologies of the brand, but at a more affordable price for consumers. Obviously, this implies some sacrifices on some features, but not on the essential, we are assured on the side of iRobot.
The Roomba i7 + winning recipe for cleaning
The newcomer therefore takes up the recipe for the Roomba i7 +, the spearhead of the range, with the intelligent navigation system, the personalization of household settings and the Clean Base, the self-emptying station which sucks up dust from the robot and also serves charging cradle. He can thus collect up to 60 days of dirt in his allergenic bag. You never touch the dust and then just close the bag to throw it away.
With a more elegant design and a textile effect on the top, the Roomba i3 + looks great. It is equipped with double multi-surface rubber brushes for three-step cleaning. Thanks to a suction power 10 times more powerful than the models of the Series 600, encrusted dust, hair, debris or animal hair: nothing can resist it, and this, in every corner thanks to the side brush that will sweep dirt from corners and along walls. And the Roomba i3 + takes advantage of DirtDetect technology and its sensors that detect places requiring more attention for the robot to clean more deeply.
The robot vacuum cleaner is able to alert you to the need for additional cleaning due to the presence of more pollens or mites. Its high-efficiency filter captures 99% of allergens and molds of all kinds, signaling to the robot the need for more frequent cleaning.
On the cleaning side, the Roomba i3 + uses the principle of linear cleaning using its four sensors. The one below allows you to follow the ground in a straight line. The two on-board gyroscopes judge obstacles and their shape (walls, corners, etc.) in order to set benchmarks and define the parts. Finally, bumpers detect obstacles in 3D by reacting to the environment, to furniture, but also to the height of a piece of furniture under which the vacuum cleaner can circulate without being blocked. In real time, they will provide a real time map with the obstacles indicated.
Concessions on functions
But unlike the Roomba i7, the i3 + does not memorize the mapping. He will not be able to regain his marks in a room that he has already cleaned. This is one of the concessions made to lower the final price. However, it is able to judge that its battery level is too low to finish its task and it will automatically recharge itself before resuming cleaning afterwards.
Compared to the high-end model of the series, the Roomba i3 + is nevertheless deprived of several features. You will obviously not be able to ask it to clean by room since it cannot define or name them. It will also not be able to memorize areas to be avoided or prioritized. Being deprived of mapping, it does not have the Smart Charge & Resume function which allows it to recharge just what it takes to finish its task. You will have to wait for it to be fully refreshed before leaving to finish its cleaning.
A customizable robot that can be controlled by voice
The Roomba i3 + uses the same iRobot Home mobile app (Android or iOS) as the i7. You will define the cleaning programs that it should perform according to your needs. Thanks to on-board artificial intelligence, the robot vacuum cleaner learns and memorizes your operating preferences. Via the app, he can even give you personalized suggestions (hours of activity, cleaning if your pet loses a lot of hair or if he notices too much pollen …) and create automations with iRobot Genius and IFTTT Connect.
You can also sync the Roomba i3 + with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice assistants to control the robotic vacuum cleaner by voice, operate it in concert with the iRobot Braava Jet m6 robot mop (Imprint Link technology) for a thorough cleaning.
The new iRobot robot vacuum cleaner is therefore presented as a solution with high-end cleaning possibilities, the Roomba i7 + from which it takes the dust bin, but with some concessions to arrive at a tighter and more democratized price. The Roomba i3 + is now available and sold for 699 euros against nearly 1000 euros for the i7 +.
A model without the self-draining base, the Roomba i3, is expected a little later. Its price could then be lowered by around 200 to 250 euros.
