Elon Musk has hinted that Tesla will indeed add an electric van to its vehicle catalog as the trendy utility market slowly but surely begins to take shape.
In 2016, Elon Musk aroused a first interest in electric vans. Two years later, he said he was interested in working with Daimler on a potential trendy Sprinter. The German giant clearly did not wait for its American counterpart to launch a non-thermal version of its utility, available on the market since the end of 2019.
Musk wants a van, but faces a problem
Since then, the idea of a Tesla electric van has not really resurfaced. Until the subject was raised by analyst Joseph Spak as part of the traditional phone call following the quarterly publication of the group’s results. The person concerned in particular challenged Mr. Musk on the subject, relays Teslarati.
«I think Tesla will definitely make an electric van at some pointSaid the boss of SpaceX. But a major issue is preventing Musk from walking the talk in the short term: the manufacture of new generation batteries, a real constraint on mass production at the time of this writing.
Competition already positioned
« Prototypes are easy to make. Large-scale production is very difficult», Underlined the American entrepreneur, who must already meet a strong demand for its Model 3, Model Y, Model X and Model S. It will never be too late to position itself in this niche, on condition of marketing a vehicle capable of annoying the competition.
Because the competition, precisely, is already present. In recent months, the electric utility segment has been taken by storm by major manufacturers, such as Mercedes (eSprinter), Citröen (ë-Jumpy), Peugeot (e-Expert) or even Renault (Kangoo ZE) . The American manufacturer Rivian will even supply 100,000 connected vans to Amazon.
