On October 4, 1957, Sputnik 1 was launched from Baikonur, Kazakhstan; the first satellite made by man to orbit the earth. It marked the beginning of what is now considered the Space Age. Shocking the world with its successful launch, Sputnik began the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States, unleashing an era of rapid technological advancement in the field of space exploration. After 3 months in orbit, Sputnik would re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere, disintegrating completely on January 4, 1958.
