That’s it, the Galaxy S21 has been officially announced! Pre-orders have started with Boulanger, which offers it from 859 euros in its standard version, 1059 euros for the S21 + version and 1259 euros for the S21 Ultra version.
As expected, Samsung announced its new Galaxy S21 yesterday. There are three of them, like last year, with the 6.2-inch Galaxy S21, the 6.7-inch Galaxy S21 + and the 6.7-inch Galaxy S21 Ultra, but with an advanced photo module.
The three phones are already available for pre-order on the Boulanger site. Here are the prices and colors offered:
As usual, during the time of pre-orders of the Galaxy S21 (from January 15 to 28), Samsung is offering connected accessories to first buyers depending on the smartphone pre-ordered.
- For any pre-order of the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 +: a pair of Buds Live wireless headphones is offered, in addition to a Galaxy SmartTag tracker.
- For any pre-order of the Galaxy S21 Ultra: a pair of Buds Pro wireless headphones is offered, in addition to a Galaxy SmartTag tracker.
What are the main new features of the Samsung Galaxy S21?
For its Galaxy S21, Samsung has sought above all to perfect the formula of the Galaxy S20. He therefore slightly retouched the design of his phone, improved the photo sensors and strengthened his technical sheet. Here is what to remember from the main novelties.
A refined design
For the Galaxy S21, Samsung has not radically changed its formula. We therefore find a design very close to the Galaxy S20. The Galaxy S21 still has a beautiful screen borderless 6.2 or 6.7 inch with a small punch inserted at the top of the screen for the front camera.
Samsung has further improved the screen of its smartphone. It is still a Full HD + definition Dynamic AMOLED display on the Galaxy S21 and S21 + and Quad HD + on the S21 Ultra. They once again benefit from a display frequency of 120 Hz, but adaptive this year. That is, the display frequency automatically adapts to the content displayed on the screen.
The back has also been slightly retouched compared to the Galaxy S20. The photo module is now surrounded by an elegant aluminum frame which highlights the various sensors. The Galaxy S21 shell is made of (very good) plastic, while the Galaxy S21 + and S21 Ultra shell is made of glass.
Whatever the model, the Galaxy S21 benefits from Samsung’s long experience in the field of premium smartphones. It is a device that is comfortable to handle and that exudes quality. A smartphone made to last for many years.
A muscular technical sheet
The main difference between the Galaxy S20 and S21 undoubtedly comes from its technical sheet. The Galaxy S21 features Samsung’s brand new high-end SoC, the Exynos 2100. This chip has two particularities:
- It is engraved in 5 nm, which means that it consumes less and that the Galaxy S21 enjoys better autonomy.
- It comes with a 5G modem as standard. Unlike the Galaxy S20, there is only one version of the Galaxy S21, the 5G version!
For the rest, the Galaxy S21 has everything you would expect from a high-end smartphone. Its cheapest version has 128 GB of storage space and 8 GB of RAM. Finally, the Galaxy S21 has a 4000 mAh battery (4800 mAh on the Galaxy S21 + and 5000 mAh on the S21 Ultra), compatible with 25 Watts fast charging and 15 Watts fast wireless charging. Please note, for the first time on a Galaxy S, the charger is not supplied with smartphones.
An even better camera
The photo is the sinews of war in the battles between manufacturers of high-end smartphones. This is something Samsung hasn’t overlooked with the Galaxy S21. The Galaxy S21 and S21 + thus have a photo module comprising 3 sensors:
- a main sensor of 12 megapixels (f / 1.8)
- a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor (f / 2.2)
- 64 Mpx x3 hybrid zoom sensor (f / 2.0)
Samsung has not fallen into the trap of multiplying sensors. He just improved them technically compared to last year. Night mode is thus more efficient and optical stabilization has been improved.
Some software additions are also in the game, such as director mode. Integrated into the Galaxy S21 photo application, this mode allows, when taking a video, to constantly have the point of view of other photo sensors. Ideal for knowing whether to switch to a wider or more zoomed shot.
Like last year, the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s case is a bit of a standout when it comes to the photo. There are no longer 3, but 5 photo sensors:
- a main sensor of 108 megapixels (f / 1.8)
- a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor (f / 2.2)
- a sensor with optical zoom x3 of 10 megapixels (f / 2.4)
- a sensor with 10-megapixel optical zoom x10 (f / 4.9)
- a ToF sensor, a depth sensor that measures the depth of field to improve the focus of photos
Samsung’s goal here is to offer the best smartphone in terms of photos. Its imposing photo unit thus embeds a large 108 megapixel sensor and its many sensors with optical zoom allow it to zoom up to 100 times in digital zoom. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is positioned as THE brand’s photophone.
Release date scheduled for January 29, 2021
The Galaxy S21 will be released on January 29 in France. It is already available for pre-order on the Boulanger site, from 859 euros. This price is, moreover, one of the most interesting novelties: when it was released last year, the Galaxy S20 was sold for 909 euros. The Galaxy S21 is 50 euros cheaper than its predecessor.
