Nikon in turn offers to turn your camera into a webcam

After Panasonic, Canon or Sony, it’s Nikon’s turn to let you turn your camera into a webcam. The Japanese manufacturer has uploaded dedicated software, compatible with Windows 10 and macOS.

Since the beginning of the year, camera manufacturers seem to have discovered a new feature for their bodies. While more and more people are encouraged to work remotely, with video meetings, several brands have developed software to transform cameras into webcams.

This was already the case with Panasonic, Sony, Canon or Fujifilm. Now it is the turn of the third player in the market, Nikon, to present a similar functionality. The Japanese manufacturer has made its Webcam Utility software available on Windows 10 and macOS. As its name suggests, this software allows you to retrieve the video stream from a Nikon camera and broadcast it as a virtual webcam from your computer.

A simple USB cable is enough

To do this, all you have to do is connect your Nikon camera by USB to the computer. Suffice to say that it turns out to be easier – and more economical – than going through a dedicated acquisition card as proposed by Elgato with its Cam Link.

The user then only has to select the video stream as a virtual webcam, whether for videoconferencing services such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, Skype or Facebook Messenger, or to stream his webcam online, on Twitch for example.

The Webcam Utility software is compatible with a large number of Nikon cameras, but especially high-end models:

  • Nikon Z7 II
  • Nikon Z7
  • Nikon Z6 II
  • Nikon Z6
  • Nikon Z5
  • Nikon z50
  • Nikon D6
  • Nikon D5
  • Nikon D850
  • Nikon D810
  • Nikon D780
  • Nikon d750

  • Nikon D7500
  • Nikon D7200
  • Nikon D5600
  • Nikon D5500

The Webcam Utility software is already available for download from the Nikon website, as well for Windows 10 what for macOS.
