Musk postpones subscription for umpteenth time to customers’ chagrin

Expected at the end of 2020 and then at the beginning of 2021, the subscription for the “Fully autonomous driving capacity” pack will not finally arrive until the second quarter of the year. It is clear that Elon Musk was too optimistic about the timing of this project.

It’s a fact: some of Elon Musk’s Twitter posts shouldn’t be taken at face value. The SpaceX boss loves to use the blue bird social network to spread some information about Tesla’s plans. Except that sometimes, the elements communicated simply do not correspond to reality.

Musk still very optimistic

This is sometimes the case with the business calendar. The American entrepreneur is indeed very optimistic about the deployment of such and such a feature and novelty. Like the subscription for the autonomous driving pack, which we have already heard about for almost a year now. Without seeing the color.

This subscription consists of paying a monthly sum to access the “Fully autonomous driving capability” of a Tesla. Today, this option is billed for 7,500 euros in France, in exchange for the recognition and reaction of the vehicle to traffic lights and stop signs, and to city driving assistance (not yet available).

From the end of 2020 to the second quarter of 2021

So far, Mr. Musk had counted on the end of 2020 to set up this type of package. In September, clues unearthed in the source code of the application made him think even more. Then in December, Elon Musk covered his back by evoking the start of the 2021 vintage. The month of March has begun, and still nothing on the horizon.

Q2 for sure

The interested party then took advantage of a question from a twitter user to update said calendar: the subscription for the FSD (Full Self-Driving) pack will finally land in the second quarter of the year, i.e. between the month of April and June. Unless he decides to postpone the project for the umpteenth time.

Elon Musk also said “that buying the FSD option will always be a better deal in the long run than taking out a subscription“. This sentence is not trivial: in the future, Tesla intends to transform its fleet of electric vehicles into a fleet of autonomous robot taxis. Users will then be able to rent their vehicle and generate income.

How does Tesla Autopilot work and what are its benefits?

Billed as the most advanced system today, Tesla’s “Autopilot” is packed with features, algorithms and evaluation processes.
