Ahead of CES 2021, the Korean manufacturer Samsung unveiled the second generation of its Galaxy Chromebook. The latter has the particularity of being the first laptop on Chrome OS to have a QLED panel.
Last year, Samsung unveiled its first Galaxy Chromebook. Powered by an Intel Core-i5 chip and 8 GB of RAM, the latter was immediately positioned on the high end. It was marketed for $ 999. This year, the manufacturer is reviewing its strategy.
Less swift, but cheaper
The Galaxy Chromebook 2 uses a chassis similar to the previous model. We thus find a 13.3-inch slab articulated on a hinge that can pivot 180 °. The touch screen offers Full HD definition (1920 x 1080 pixels).
Samsung has incorporated its QLED technology based on liquid nanocrystals. This notably offers more efficient backlighting with richer colors. It would also be the very first Chromebook to accommodate this device.
If we could expect a rise in power for this new version, it is not. Samsung swapped out the Intel Core-i5 processor for a 10th generation Core-I3 (10110U). In some markets, the machine will be powered by an Intel Celeron processor (5205U). Still depending on the geographic area, Samsung will add 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM.
However, the device shows a drastic drop in its selling price since it will be marketed in the United States from $ 549.99, or $ 699 with a Core-i3. For the time being, no information has been communicated on its availability for the French market.
Among other technical features, the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 will be available with 64 or 128 GB of internal storage, expandable via a microSD card reader.
The computer is compatible with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 connections. Note also two USB-C ports, a 720p webcam and a headphone / microphone output jack.
The Galaxy ChromeBook 2 is compatible with the company’s stylus, which is said to offer 4,096 levels of pressure.
It remains to be seen whether Samsung will consider opening the marketing of its Chromebook on the Old Continent. The first version, which we were able to take in hand last year, was not sold in France.
