Sony should revive its Xperia Compact range to compete with Apple’s iPhone 12 Mini. A leak reveals the design.
While HTC has all but disappeared, and LG may soon throw in the towel, Sony is one of the first manufacturers of Android smartphones to be preserved. It must be said that the Japanese brand has always managed to find ways to distinguish itself from the rest of the market. The best example is undoubtedly its Compact range which allowed for several years to have a high-end smartphone in a “mini” format and with a price sometimes lower than the competitors. The author of this article in particular remembers his expensive Xperia Z3 Compact which offered a waterproof design and excellent battery life with a small design.
If Sony ended up putting its Xperia Compact range aside, the brand is now considering a big comeback. This idea would be driven by the arrival on the market of Apple’s iPhone 12 Mini, which incorporates several ingredients from the recipe dear to Sony.
Here is the design of the future Xperia Compact
Today the well-known OnLeaks offers us a first glimpse of this future Sony Xperia Compact 2021. The new smartphone would be equipped with a 5.5-inch screen, still in an elongated borderless format, with a fairly rectangular design, which does not reminiscent of the old Xperia, while taking inspiration from the recent Xperia 5 II.
According to OnLeaks, the phone measures approximately 140 x 68.9 x 8.9mm, making it a larger phone than the iPhone 12 Mini (131.5 x 64.2 x 7.4mm), but all the same very compact for the Android market. This roughly matches the dimensions of the Google Pixel 5 (144.7 x 70.4 x 8mm).
We can see that the front camera would be integrated as a water droplet in the front center, with an 8 megapixel sensor. On the back, it is a camera module that would be installed with a main sensor of 13 megapixels. On the side we find the volume control button and the camera button, one of Sony’s trademarks. The fingerprint reader is also located on the edge, and also plays the role of the power button.
Last detail to note on this phone, the presence of a 3.5 mm jack port on the top, and a USB-C port below.
The question of value for money
It now remains to discover more about this next smartphone. The Onleaks leak mainly focuses on the design, and it will be necessary to wait for other leaks to discover more on its technical sheet. Can this smartphone compete with high-end devices? Or will it be relegated to the rank of mid-range as was the case with some Xperia Compacts and the previous iPhone SE? Finally, at what price will Sony want to market this new product? The brand knew how to be very competitive with the Compact range. It will be interesting to see what it can offer in 2021.
