Mentioned in September 2020 during Tesla Battery Day and expected by 2023 or even 2024, Tesla’s $ 25,000 electric car could finally land as early as 2022.
In September 2020, Tesla grabbed the media spotlight at its highly anticipated Battery Day talk. The opportunity to discover a new Boosted Model S Plaid, but also and especially the new generation of battery cells – the famous 4680 cells – which will allow it to both lower production costs and increase the autonomy of its electric vehicles.
Elon Musk also took advantage of the event to reaffirm his desire to market an electric and autonomous car at 25,000 dollars (a little over 20,000 euros HT), and this, by 2023 or even 2024. The project had already been mentioned in 2018 and was initially due to materialize around 2021. But as always, the provisional schedules announced by the boss of SpaceX should be treated with caution.
The point is that new elements are putting the matter back on the table. The specialized site Electrek cites documents from the Shanghai Gigafactory to the Chinese government. The documents in question refer in particular to a new electric car between 160,000 and 200,000 yuan, or 24,000 to 30,000 dollars (between 20,000 and 25,000 euros excluding tax).
But above all, a date relating to mass production and delivery would also be mentioned: from 2022. Here again, this information must be taken with a grain of salt. But if Elon Musk and his teams succeed, then Tesla would shake up the automotive industry with an affordable electric vehicle with a range worthy of the name.
Highly efficient Tesla in China
Tesla’s China-based infrastructure has already shown its efficiency time and time again, as the Gigafactory 3 was operational earlier than expected. What if the American group had a little head start here on the launch of its affordable car? This would then be good news for consumers, but a blow to competition.
