Between the arrival of more and more smartphones with foldable screens, the rise of 5G, the return of Microsoft and the future flagships of the leaders of the sector, the year 2021 promises a lot of innovations on the smartphone side. Here are the devices we are waiting for the most!
Samsung Galaxy S21, iPhone 13 or even OnePlus 9, we already know the identity of the next most anticipated smartphones of the year 2021. We have gathered here a list of the most anticipated devices, and what we already know about them thanks to manufacturer habits, leaks and rumors.
The big launches in the coming months
All these dates should be taken with a grain of salt. How did we determine them? By taking into account the rumors as well as the release dates of the previous models. The year 2020 has turned many plans upside down, and these habits may have changed in 2021 for some manufacturers.
- Samsung Galaxy S21: January 14, 2021
- OnePlus 9: start of 2021
- Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 2: start of 2021
- Oppo Find X3 Pro: Spring 2021
- Google Pixel 5 a / 6: summer 2021
- Apple iPhone 13: fall 2021
We do not have the same level of information on the different devices, so we have only grouped together in this file some of the expected smartphones.
Samsung Galaxy S21
The Samsung Galaxy S21s are without a doubt the most anticipated new smartphones for the start of 2021. They represent the best that Samsung can do while remaining relatively accessible to consumers. According to many sources, the presentation should take place in January, and more precisely on January 14, 2021. This is much earlier than usual for the manufacturer.
We already know a lot of things about these new smartphones thanks to the leaks. From 879 to 1,400 euros, the three models planned (S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra) would first rely on a new design, a new photo module with high-definition sensors, and finally a new Exynos 2100 SoC in Europe.
Apple has never released as many iPhones as in 2020. The brand now sells a large catalog with four iPhone 12 models, but also its more accessible smartphone, the iPhone SE. The brand will therefore have its work cut out for it to renew all this in 2021.
We do not yet know much about these iPhone 13 which should be presented at the end of 2021. However, we can imagine a new very high-end model that would be marketed without a lightning port. The reloading and the transfer of data would be done exclusively by the Magsafe technology put forward since the iPhone 12. Of course, one can especially wonder if 2021 will not be the year of the new design for Apple, which could finally succeed in miniaturize Face ID to reduce the notch of its smartphones.
The OnePlus brand still knows a lot of fans, although its strategy has evolved a lot lately, perhaps a little too much. Anyway, the OxygenOS interface remains one of the best on the market for Android and we can’t help but wait for its next flagship, the OnePlus 9.
According to the leaks, its design should not be revolutionary. Above all, expect a performance upgrade thanks to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888. OnePlus has been able to release good products like the North in 2020, it remains to be seen what the brand will be able to offer us in 2021.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 2
What are the next major developments in the smartphone market? For Samsung, the answer to this question is the ability of a smartphone to fold. This allows either to transform it into a tablet, by unfolding the screen, or to fold it up to make it easier to carry in the pocket.
We can’t wait to see what Samsung will be able to offer as an evolution for its foldable smartphones in 2021. It is rumored that the brand could launch no less than 5 foldable models which would leave room for innovations, but also for decreases of price. Foldable smartphones have been very expensive so far, but 2021 could mark the arrival of more accessible foldable smartphones. Maybe below the 1000 euros mark?
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 showed how Samsung can improve a design very quickly from year to year. This smartphone has erased almost all the youthful flaws of the Galaxy Fold first of the name. In the batch of foldable smartphones planned by Samsung, we are therefore waiting for the successor which should very logically bear the name of Galaxy Z Fold 3.
If the evolutions of the Z Fold 2 were more obvious to guess, there are several aspects on which we would like to see Samsung focus. Until now, the Galaxy Folds did not necessarily benefit from the best of Samsung, especially on the side of the photo module, often behind. We would like to see a Z Fold 3 land that does not have to be ashamed of the Galaxy S21 in photos. And why not an integrated S Pen stylus, to make the large screen more useful when taking notes.
Oppo Find X3 Pro
For a new smartphone to be expected, it is first necessary that its manufacturer has proven itself, or that the innovations are particularly promising. This is how we expect a lot to see what Oppo will be able to concoct for us in 2021. The excellent Oppo Find X2 Pro was one of the best smartphones passed into the hands of the editorial staff in 2020. It was even our favorite smartphone of the year.
For its successor, Oppo would work with Sony on a brand new photo sensor that would allow it to go even further than the Find X2 Pro, which is already brilliant in this area. The Oppo Find X3 Pro should also resume the characteristics of a good top of the range in 2021 with a Snapdragon 888 and a high definition screen (3216 x 1440 pixels) at 120 Hz. The NFC would also be improved to make payments easier.
Google Pixel 6 ou 5a
You don’t have to be an ultra high-end smartphone to be expected. For several months now, Google has changed its strategy with its Pixel smartphones and now offers excellent cameras in the body of a good compact smartphone at a reasonable price.
We hope that Google will continue this path with its next smartphones, whether it is a possible Google Pixel 5a, or a Pixel 6. To continue to convince us, the brand will have to redo efforts on the characteristics of the photo module which are starting to age. on the Pixel 5, though Google’s processing algorithm is still unmatched.
In 2021, we expect above all to be surprised. The mainstream smartphone market is indeed a mature market where renewals are getting lighter and lighter, if we put aside more and more powerful processors, or cameras that multiply more megapixels. We would always like to see more crazy ideas, such as the LG Wing, or new players to launch on the market.
2021 is the year when Xiaomi could launch its first foldable smartphone. We are also waiting to see Oppo’s projects in this area, his latest concepts had the merit of being original. In France, this is also the year when Microsoft will finally start to market its Surface Duo. It remains to be seen if this was a simple attempt, or if the brand will develop a successor for its Android smartphone.
