According to the American site The Information, Facebook is working on a connected watch for next year. Based on Android, it would allow the group to recover more user data.
After Oculus virtual reality headsets and Portal connected screens, Facebook intends to go even further in the field of connected devices. According to the American site The Information, the social network could launch its own connected watch.
There is little that Facebook doesn’t already know about its users. It must be said that the social network already knows a large part of the internet traffic of its members, but also their tastes or their geolocation. However, with connected watches, Facebook could go even further by collecting different health data. Thus, the group of Mark Zuckerberg would seek to launch a competitor of the Apple Watch or models of Fitbit. Remember also that this is not the first time that Facebook has taken an interest in connected health, since the social network had already tried to buy Fitbit two years ago, finally capped by Google.
Paradoxically, Facebook would develop its connected watch thanks to “An open source version of Google’s Android software”. We can therefore imagine that the watch software will be derived from Wear OS, already used for example on watches from Fossil, Mobvoi or MontBlanc. In addition, Facebook would provide a data connection for its connected watch to allow it to function even without being connected via Bluetooth to a smartphone.
A price that should barely exceed the cost of production
In addition to health data, Facebook would obviously rely on its connected watch to offer social functions, in particular to respond quickly to messages received from loved ones. It would also be possible to compare his training with those of his friends or to interact with a sports coach.
Facebook should launch its connected watch next year, at a cost very close to that of the production price, the firm relying mainly on this product to collect data rather than to make a margin on sales. In addition, a second model should be launched immediately, from 2023.
