Apple now displays the repairability index of iPhones and MacBooks on its French site in order to comply with the law in force since January 1, 2021. Apple’s scores are not really excellent.
The repairability index was introduced in France on January 1, 2021. In this regard, all smartphones, PCs and TVs – among others – sold in the country must display their score to indicate to potential buyers whether it will be easy to repair the product acquired. Apple complies with this new law.
Indeed, as MacGeneration noticed, Apple’s site now displays the repairability score of its smartphones and computers.
Scores not always brilliant
The iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max thus obtain an honorable 6/10. However, the Phone 11 Pro Max and iPhone XR showed less glowing ratings: 4.5 / 10 each. It’s hardly better for the XS Max and XS variants.
Finally, the iPhone 7 is Apple’s best student in this exercise with a repeatability index evaluated at 6.7 / 10.
On the Mac side, the average does not improve much. As an example, the MacBook Air M1 is the highest rated in the catalog with a score of 6.5 / 10, followed closely by the 16-inch MacBook Pro (6.3). Note that the 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 doesn’t score more than a 5.6 on the scale.
Five major scoring criteria
Remember that the repairability index is based on five major criteria, all counting for two points on the final score. The first four are concerned with documentation, product disassembly, availability of spare parts and their price. The last criterion may vary depending on the devices concerned by this index, but in the context of a smartphone for example, it is the software part that is mainly noted.
It is important to also specify that it is the manufacturers who self-assess themselves by following this scale which is intended to be strict. In addition, the ratings of Apple products may seem low compared to a Samsung Galaxy S21 which displays a good 8.2 / 10. However, a turn on the official list from the repairability index shows that ratings of 8 or more are quite rare for smartphones.
Note that on the Apple site, you must select the desired device and start the purchase procedure, choose the color and the storage capacity and indicate if you have an iPhone to take back before seeing the score displayed. of repairability.
