The Fossil group unveils a new hybrid watch for its Skagen brand. The latter has the particularity of having an E-ink screen and being rich in features despite the absence of WearOS.
In the smartwatch market, Fossil has taken it slow. The group first deployed hybrid models connecting to the smartphone via Bluetooth and capable of receiving notifications. Subsequently, the company adopted WearOS. However, the system has long remained without major major changes.
A greedy e-ink screen
Unlike the Skagen Falster 3 smartwatch, the new Skagen Jorn Hybrid HR therefore does not have WearOS. Like the Fossil Hybrid HR, it features an E-ink screen. However, unlike Fossil’s watch, the latter seems to only be able to accommodate three widgets.
The E-ink screen has the advantage of consuming very little energy. The brand communicates on a two-week battery life with the screen always on. Note also a rapid recharging device allowing to obtain 80% of battery in 50 minutes.
A credible alternative to WearOS
In terms of functionality, the new Skagen Jorn Hybrid HR includes a pedometer, a heart rate monitor, as well as a sensor for analyzing the quality of sleep. The watch is able to detect sports activity and also offers to return the number of calories burned.
The Skagen Jorn Hybrid HR does not have a GPS chip. For geolocation, the watch is paired with a smartphone via Bluetooth. After a cycling or jogging session, the associated mobile application allows you to find your route and travel time.
In addition to the possibility of receiving notifications from the smartphone, the dial can accommodate different graphical interfaces and also allows to take control of the music.
In short, Skagen is adorned with a new smartwatch offering most of the features sought on a connected watch while avoiding the limits of WearOS which only offers one or two days of autonomy.
The Skagen Jorn Hybrid HR benefits from a 3ATM certification. It is therefore water resistant, but cannot be worn for swimming. Five models will be offered with 42mm or 38mm dials and straps also in standard sizes 22mm or 18mm wide. The marketing price announced in the United States is 195 dollars, or about 160 euros excluding tax.
