4 reasons why it is better to buy a car in 2020 than in 2021

Aid plans In mid-June, the Government launched two aid plans for the purchase of new vehicles as a fundamental pillar of its rescue the auto industry that is being hit hard by COVID-19. One is the Renove Plan. Endowed with 250 million euros, the Plan Renove 2020 finances the acquisition of vehicles of all technologies. Of the total amount, 80% is destined to the acquisition of tourism; 25 million euros for the purchase of commercial vehicles; five million for motorcycles and 20 million euros to finance the acquisition of buses and coaches. With the Renove Plan, the buyer gets a discount on the final price of the car whose amount ranges between 400 and 5,500 euros. The amount to be received depends on factors such as who the beneficiary is (they can be individuals and freelancers, also SMEs and large companies); of the chosen vehicle (the maximum aid is for Zero Emissions, but there is also a subsidy for diesel and gasoline); large families and households with incomes below 1,500 euros a month add up to euros. As mandatory conditions to receive Renove aid: scrapping an old vehicle; that the new one has homologated emissions of less than 120 grams of CO2 per km traveled; and that the price, before taxes, is less than 35,000 euros (45,000 if it is an electric one). The other is the Moves 2020 Plan. The second edition of the aid plan for the purchase of efficient vehicles has a budget of 100 million euros. This money is used to finance the acquisition, the installation of recharging points, the implementation of rental electric bike services and the companies’ efficient mobility plans. The autonomous communities are in charge of distributing the money (each one has received a percentage of the total budget based on its inhabitants), on the condition that the maximum allocated to purchase aid cannot exceed 70% of the total. Why is it better to buy a car now than in 2021 as far as aid is concerned? The Renove Plan will be in force until the last day of 2020; The Moves is valid for one year from activation by each autonomous community or until the budget is exhausted. In Madrid, for example, the allocation ran out just two weeks after its approval, so the regional government has decided to add a million more euros. 2. Changes in DGT labels Although there is no confirmed date, it is official that the General Directorate of Traffic plans to modify the current vehicle classification system for their polluting emissions. Many voices criticize the fact that plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) enjoy the advantages of Zero Emissions when their autonomy in electric mode exceeds 40 km. From Traffic they understand that this figure is sufficient for daily urban use; the downside is that having a combustion engine can never charge the battery and circulate with the same emissions as a diesel but without paying the SER zone, registration and circulation tax in some cases … To prevent this from happening, the DGT assesses the possibility of tweaking the requirements to access the different groups and even the creation of a new environmental label. If so, it is possible that some models that in 2020 do not pay a registration fee will have to do so in 2020; or that PHEVs lose some of their current tax and circulation benefits. Those who register in 2020 will not lose it as the changes to the labels will not be retroactive. 3. Changes in emission protocols The WLTP will be the only standard for homologation of automobile consumption as of January 1, 2021. When it enters into force, the homologated figures for consumption and emissions will increase, as this new form of measurement it is stricter, in order to more closely resemble the real-life use of a car. This will have a direct impact on the registration tax. A growth in self-registrations of electric cars is also expected to support manufacturers to avoid fines for excess emissions.
