Don’t call it Snapdragon 875! Qualcomm’s new high-end platform is actually called Snapdragon 888. A name that refers to the big changes made to this generation and the Chinese lucky number. If we have to wait until tomorrow to learn more about the complete architecture of this SoC, we can already draw a first robot portrait of the queen chip of 2021.

5 nm, AI, gaming…

Qualcomm has yet to reveal all the details of the Snapdragon 888, but has already said enough to make our mouths water. For starters, this chip is etched in 5nm, just like the Apple A14 and the Kirin 9000, which promises a significant performance boost.

But Qualcomm has mainly focused on its embedded technologies such as the Snapdragon Elite Gaming (3rd generation here) or the Qualcomm AI Engine (6th generation). The latter is notably capable of processing up to 26 TOPS (trillion operations per second), which is nearly double what the Snapdragon 865 offered.

The ISP, the unit dedicated to photography, has also been particularly worked on. This ISP allows a capture of 2.7 Gigapixels per second, or 120 photos of 12 Megapixels. That’s a 35% increase over the previous generation.

Of course, 5G is also in the game with the Snapdragon X60. Big news compared to last year, this modem is directly integrated into the SoC.
